Upcycling Jewellery: Giving New Life to Forgotten Treasures

Upcycling is the art of transformation. It is the process of taking something old, broken, or no longer usable in its current form and turning it into something new, beautiful, and meaningful—often with greater value than the original. Unlike recycling, which breaks materials down to their raw components, upcycling preserves and celebrates what already exists. It honours the past while creating something entirely fresh for the present.

In the world of jewellery, upcycling is especially powerful. Jewellery carries stories. It holds memories, craftsmanship, and energy. When a piece breaks, it is easy to see it as the end of its life—but in reality, it is simply the beginning of a new chapter.

I often seek out broken jewellery, both vintage and modern, in order to reuse the various components e.g. beads, chains, clasps… Through meditation, dreams and drawings, I reimagine the elements and visualise them in new, unique jewellery designs. Upcycling is a fantastic creative outlet and is extremely satisfying knowing you have saved jewellery from ending up in landfill.

Don’t get me wrong, it can be challenging and some pieces may take weeks or months to create. Seeing the transformation from broken to beautiful once more is well worth the wait!

Why Upcycle Broken Jewellery?

Broken jewellery is full of potential. Whether it’s a snapped chain, a single orphaned earring, or a damaged brooch, these pieces still contain beauty in their materials, textures, and history.

1. Sustainability and Conscious Creation

Upcycling jewellery reduces waste and helps minimise the environmental impact of modern production. Mining for new metals and gemstones is resource-intensive, and fast fashion jewellery is often designed to be disposable. By upcycling existing materials, we reduce the demand for new resources and give forgotten pieces a second life.

Choosing upcycled jewellery is a conscious decision—one that supports sustainability and honours what already exists rather than constantly consuming something new.

2. Preserving Craftsmanship and History

Many older jewellery pieces were made with exceptional care and craftsmanship. Even when damaged, their components—such as intricate metalwork, unique clasps, or decorative elements—are often far superior to mass-produced modern alternatives.

Upcycling preserves these details. It allows the artistry of the past to continue living and being appreciated in a new form.

3. Creating Something Truly Unique

Upcycled jewellery is, by its very nature, one-of-a-kind. No two source pieces are identical, and no two transformations are exactly the same. When you wear upcycled jewellery, you are wearing something that no one else in the world has.

This uniqueness creates a deeper connection between the wearer and the piece. It becomes personal. It becomes meaningful.

4. Emotional and Symbolic Renewal

Sometimes jewellery breaks during important moments in our lives. Rather than discarding it, upcycling allows that piece to evolve alongside you. It becomes a symbol of renewal, resilience, and transformation.

It reminds us that broken does not have to lead to abandonment.

The Beauty of Transformation: Introducing the “Unbuckled” Collection

This philosophy is at the heart of my upcoming jewellery collection, Unbuckled, launching this March.

The Unbuckled collection is created entirely from vintage belt buckles that have been carefully sourced and transformed into wearable jewellery. Once functional objects designed for utility, these buckles are now reborn as statement pieces—necklaces and wearable art that celebrate both strength and beauty.

Each buckle carries its own character: the curves, textures, and patina developed over decades of existence. By removing them from their original purpose and reimagining them as jewellery, I am giving them a new voice and a new story.

No two pieces in the Unbuckled collection are the same. Each one is entirely unique, shaped by its past and redefined for the present.

This collection represents everything I believe in: sustainability, creativity, and connection. It is about seeing potential where others see something finished. It is about honouring the past while creating something new.

Most importantly, it is about transformation.

Why Upcycling Matters More Than Ever

We live in a world that often encourages us to discard and replace. Upcycling challenges that mindset. It invites us to slow down, to see value in what already exists, and to appreciate the beauty of reinvention.

When you choose upcycled jewellery, you are choosing more than an accessory. You are choosing a story. You are choosing sustainability. You are choosing something made with intention, care, and creativity.

You are choosing to be part of the journey of transformation.

I had so much fun creating the ‘Unbuckled’ jewellery collection and it truly celebrates & inspires joy, creativity and sustainability!

Vintage now, always and forever.

Slow is the way to go

Introduction

Fast fashion jewellery closely mirrors the clothing industries trend of rapidly producing cheap, low-quality and trendy pieces designed to be worn once and disposed of.

My intention here is to highlight the damaging effects of fast fashion and to encourage you to consider more ethical and sustainable options. Sustainability is a driving force in my business and informs the kind of materials and packing I use. I prefer to upcycle, recycle and reuse materials that are already in existence as well as restore neglected vintage jewellery pieces. Let’s take a look at the fast fashion industry:

The Bigger Picture: Fast Fashion’s Environmental Toll

Even though most stats focus on clothing, many of the same environmental issues apply directly to jewellery—especially with mass-produced, trend-driven pieces.

The global fashion industry accounts for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions—that’s more than international aviation and maritime shipping combined .

It produces over 92 million tonnes of textile waste each year, with just 1% of clothes recycled into new garments .

80 billion new garments are produced annually .

The industry uses 93 billion cubic meters of water annually, accounting for 20% of global wastewater .

Synthetic fibres—used in most fast fashion—are major sources of microplastic pollution. Textile washing alone releases up to 500,000 tonnes of microfibres into oceans each year, equivalent to 50 billion plastic bottles .

Fast fashion jewellery often uses cheap synthetic materials, toxic chemical plating, poor-quality metals, and disposable design—so while the jewellery sector isn’t as large as apparel, the same resource-waste and pollution patterns apply, magnified by widespread turnover and low quality.

Trying to keep up with fashion trends can be draining financially and energetically. They change extremely fast, not just from season to season, but from week to week. The pressures to keep up with these trends infiltrate our day to day lives through social media, adverts, magazines and TV shows. It can be tempting, especially for young people to try and keep up with the trends.

Another attraction can be the low cost of these trendy jewellery items. However cheap jewellery comes with a bigger cost to the environment and it’s really worth considering this the next time you’re on the high street and on the look out for jewellery.

Why choose Vintage, Pre-Owned or recycled/upcycled Jewellery

Whilst vintage and handcrafted jewellery might come with a bigger price tag, your purchase is more likely to be an investment piece you’ll treasure for years to come.

No new resource extraction: recycled/upcycled jewellery reuses existing materials, preventing fresh mining, manufacturing and its environmental fallout .

Resource conservation: Every vintage piece revived saves water, energy, and raw materials—whether gold, gems, or metals.

Circular economy in action: Reusing existing pieces contributes to waste reduction and avoids the high emissions intrinsic to mining.

Lower carbon footprint per piece: Processing existing metals and gems has a much smaller footprint than mining; for example, manufactures from recycled metals emit significantly less CO₂ .

Supports sustainable consumer behaviour: Reusing aligns with a more thoughtful, circular lifestyle—something growing in popularity (e.g., 42% of consumers purchased second-hand clothing last year) .

Transparency and connection: Vintage items carry history, uniqueness, and stories—traits seldom found in mass-produced fast fashion pieces.

Unique and quirky designs from the past, revived for the future. You’re more likely to come across u usual and quirky designs when shopping for vintage or handmade pieces.

Custom made designs – if you would like something really special, some handmade jewellers will offer a custom design option. Having something created just for you is not just exciting for the customer, but also challenges the individual making the item. Your also guaranteed to be the only person wearing this design!

Shopping sustainably often means you’re supporting homegrown, local businesses that are extremely passionate about their products.

Consumer demand for sustainability is on the rise globally as people become more aware of the environmental and social impact of the fashion industry. Quality over quantity is becoming increasingly important, with consumers paying more attention to the materials being used, their origin and carbon footprint.

Choosing vintage or pre-owned jewellery doesn’t just help the planet — it helps people too. By buying from local independent jewellers, vintage sellers, and upcyclers, you’re putting money directly back into your community instead of into the pockets of giant fast-fashion corporations.

Every purchase makes a difference: Studies show that for every £1 spent with a small business, around 63p stays in the local economy, compared to only 40p when spent with a larger chain (Federation of Small Businesses, UK).

Ethical and transparent sourcing: Independent makers often hand-select materials, reuse vintage components, or work with recycled metals. That means you can trace where your jewellery comes from and feel confident it’s made with care.

Unique pieces with a story: Unlike mass-produced fast fashion jewellery, small business creations and curated vintage finds are often one-of-a-kind. They carry history, creativity, and individuality.

Human connection: Buying from a small business means supporting someone’s passion and livelihood. You’re not just a transaction—you’re part of a story, a community, and a movement towards slower, more meaningful fashion.

Conclusion

In short: every ring, necklace, or bracelet you buy from a small business is a vote for creativity, sustainability, and community over exploitation and waste.

Slow is the way to go. Buy pieces that truly speak to your heart and wear them as often as possible! I still have jewellery I bought when I was a teenager and was gifted from family members. They hold wonderful memories and bring me so much joy.

Do you have a favourite jewellery piece you enjoy wearing time and time again? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to hear your stories.

Copper Jewellery

Why copper jewellery turns your skin green & how to prevent it

Copper jewellery has been adored for centuries — from ancient Egyptian cuffs to modern bohemian bangles — for its warm glow, affordability, and healing associations. Copper is an essential mineral, meaning it occurs naturally in the human body, but also out in nature. Copper is extremely malleable and great for jewellery making, especially is you wish to add a different colour to your designs.

But if you’ve ever worn copper and noticed a green tinge on your skin, you’re not alone.

Let’s explore why this happens and what jewellery makers can do to prevent it.

That greenish mark isn’t harmful — it’s simply chemistry at work.

When copper comes into contact with skin, sweat, and oils, it reacts with the acids and moisture present. This creates copper salts, most often copper carbonate, which are green in colour. It’s the same process that turns the Statue of Liberty’s copper surface a pale green patina over time.

Factors that can make the green effect more likely include:

High humidity – Moisture speeds up oxidation.

Sweating – Wearing copper during exercise or in hot weather.

Lotions or cosmetics – Some skincare products accelerate the reaction.

Body chemistry – Natural pH levels in skin vary, so some people experience greening more often than others.

Is it dangerous?

For most people, the green discolouration is harmless and washes off with soap and water.

However, if someone has a copper allergy they might experience itching, redness, or rash instead of simple discolouration. Please do not wear copper jewellery if you have an allergy to copper!

How Jewellery Makers Can Prevent Copper from Turning Skin Green

While you can’t change copper’s natural chemistry, you can slow or stop the skin reaction. Here are some tried-and-tested methods:

1. Apply a Clear Protective Coating

A thin layer of jewellery sealant, clear lacquer, or even clear nail polish on the skin-contact areas creates a barrier between the metal and skin. Make sure your piece is clean before apply the coating.

Pros: Affordable, quick to apply.

Cons: Needs reapplication over time.

2. Use a Clear Wax Finish

Renaissance Wax or microcrystalline wax adds a protective layer without altering the appearance of the metal.

Pros: Invisible finish, easy to buff on.

Cons: Requires occasional re-waxing.

3. Add a Plating Layer

Electroplating copper with gold, rose gold, or rhodium can provide a more permanent barrier.

Pros: Professional, long-lasting.

Cons: Requires specialist equipment or outsourcing.

4. Mix Metals in Design

Combine copper with sterling silver, brass, or gold in areas that touch the skin. This minimises direct copper contact. I’ve also seen other jewelers use materials such as leather of felt to create a barrier between the bare copper and the skin. I have an antique copper bangle in my own collection that has a layer of green felt on the inside. Not only does this create a barrier but it also makes the bangle feel more comfortable to wear!

5. Offer Care Instructions to Customers

As a seller of copper creations I offer advice on my Etsy page & Website. For example:

Remove jewellery before swimming, showering, or exercising.

Store in a dry place.

Wipe clean after wearing.

Aviod contact with skin care products and perfumes

I also provide information on simple cleaning methods that will restore your jewellery’s colour and shine!

The following YouTube video I created shows you how to clean your jewellery, including copper pieces:

Conclusion

The green mark from copper jewellery is a sign of a natural reaction — a little reminder that your jewellery is alive with history and chemistry. I’ve always adored copper jewellery and will continue to work with this versatile metal. It helps me to feel connected to the earth and nothing else compares to the bright orange colour of copper.

I work mostly with tarnish resistant copper wire and also use various methods to prevent tarnish. Over time the tarnish barrier will wear away and when this happens you could easily purchase some Renaissance Wax and reapply.

The wax is easy to apply and a little goes a long way!

Copper is also believed to possess various healing properties including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Copper bracelets have been developed to to worn by people with arthritis, providing anti-inflammatory benefits for the wearer.

Copper is also considered an energy amplifier, believed to enhance the flow of divine vibrations and magnify the effects of mantras and spiritual practises.

If you’d like to expand your copper jewellery collection or simple try copper for the first time, why not check these pieces out over in my Etsy Shop:

Introduction

Abalone shell is a breathtaking natural material known for its iridescent blues, greens, and purples. Personally, it reminds me of the deep blue sea and I feel connected to the ocean when handling or wearing it. It has been treasured in jewellery-making for centuries, admired not only for its beauty but also for its symbolism and spiritual significance. Whether featured in vintage brooches, rings, or dress clips, abalone shell brings a timeless charm to any collection.

I recently acquired a collection of vintage abalone jewellery and after doing a little research, I wanted to share the following information with you.

What is abalone?

Abalone is an ear shaped shell and the part used in jewellery comes from the inner layer of marine molluscs, primarily species of Haliotis, found in coastal waters worldwide. In the UK we call the creature inside the shell an ormer. Ormers are edible molluscs and the shells become a bi-product of ormers grown as a food source. They grow naturally all over the world and can be found under rocks in shallows surrounding the island where they live. Any ormer taken from the sea must be at least 80mm long. Ormers are also farmed ad grown specifically for their meat.

The shimmering layer, known as nacre, is also what gives pearls their lustre. Due to its natural resilience and captivating colour play, abalone has been widely used in jewellery and decorative arts.

Abalone shell has many names including sea shells, sea ears, nacre, mother of pearl, ormer shells and paua. Paua is the native New Zealand name for abalone shells.

Abalone in vintage jewellery

Throughout history, artisans have incorporated abalone into stunning jewellery pieces:

Mid-Century Mexican Silver – Mexican silversmiths, especially those from Taxco, frequently used abalone in sterling silver designs during the 1940s–1970s.

Boho & Hippie Styles – The 1960s–70s saw a rise in nature-inspired jewellery, where abalone was a favourite material.

Art Deco & Retro Jewellery – Some earlier 1920s–40s designs featured abalone in bold geometric settings, often paired with marcasite or other stones.

Souvenir Jewellery – Many abalone pieces were sold as keepsakes from coastal locations, such as California, Hawaii, and New Zealand.

Symbolism and mystic meanings

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, abalone carries deep symbolic and mystical meanings across cultures:

Emotional Balance & Healing – Thought to have a calming energy, abalone is believed to help soothe emotions, ease anxiety, and promote harmony in relationships. The iridescent colours of the shell radiate soothing energy, helping to calm and balance emotions.

Protection & Strength – In many traditions, abalone serves as a protective talisman against negativity and adversity.

Connection to the Ocean & Water Element – As an oceanic material, abalone is associated with water energy, intuition, and emotional flow.

Spiritual Uses in Indigenous Cultures – Native American tribes and other Indigenous groups use abalone shells in smudging rituals, holding sacred herbs to cleanse energy. Maori culture values pāua (a type of abalone) for its spiritual significance in carvings and jewellery.

Chakra Associations – Abalone is linked to the third eye (intuition) and heart chakra (love & compassion), encouraging self-expression and kindness.

Why choose abalone jewellery

Abalone is not only a visually striking material but also an eco-friendly choice, especially when buying vintage pieces. Choosing abalone jewellery over modern fast fashion accessories supports sustainability by preserving natural resources and reducing waste. Additionally, vintage abalone jewellery often features superior craftsmanship and quality materials that stand the test of time.

It makes a wonderful gift for anyone who loves the ocean and can be found in most jewellery types from rings to necklaces. Due to abalone being a natural material, each piece used in jewellery is unique in shape, colour and appearance.

Taking care of your jewellery

To keep abalone jewellery looking its best:

Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals or excessive moisture.

Clean gently with a soft cloth and mild soap if needed.

Store separately to prevent scratches, as abalone is relatively soft compared to gemstones.

Most importantly, make sure to wear and enjoy your abalone jewellery! Don’t hide it away for special occasions only. Every day is special and it deserves to be worn as often as possible!

Final thoughts

Whether you’re drawn to abalone for its stunning colours, rich history, or spiritual properties, it remains a treasured material in vintage jewellery. If you’re lucky enough to find a beautifully crafted abalone piece, you’re not just wearing jewellery—you’re carrying a piece of the ocean’s magic with you.

Do you have a favourite abalone jewellery piece? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments!

Introduction

Bakelite jewellery is a key element in vintage fashion, known for its bold colours and unique craftsmanship. As a vintage jewellery expert, knowing how to identify Bakelite pieces is essential for any collector or enthusiast. This guide will explore what Bakelite is, how to recognize it, and tips for identifying genuine Bakelite jewellery in today’s market.

What is Bakelite?

Bakelite, a type of early plastic, was developed in 1907 by Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland. It was one of the first synthetic plastics, and its versatility made it a revolutionary material in the early 20th century. Bakelite was used in everything from radios to automotive parts, and it quickly gained popularity in the jewellery world during the Art Deco period.

The material is a type of phenolic resin that is heat-resistant, durable, and can be moulded into various shapes. Its versatility allowed jewellery designers to create bold, colourful pieces in a variety of styles. The distinctive qualities of Bakelite, like its glossy finish and vibrant colours, made it a favourite for accessories, especially in the 1920s and 1930s.

By the 1920s, the material had become a symbol of modernity, and many jewellery designers began experimenting with it. The streamlined, geometric shapes of the Art Deco period complemented the sleek, polished finish of Bakelite. The rise of Art Deco, combined with the advent of Bakelite, created an iconic period for vintage jewellery.

Bangles, necklaces, earrings, rings and dress clips where made from Bakelite. It was used to create all kinds of shapes including fruits, animals and plants, adding a fun element to plastic jewellery.

During the 1940s, Bakelite’s popularity waned with the advent of newer synthetic materials, but it saw a resurgence in the 1980s as vintage fashion became highly sought after.

How to Identify Bakelite Jewellery

If you are lucky enough to find a piece of Bakelite in the wild, being able to validate its authenticity is vital. Identifying genuine Bakelite jewellery can be tricky, especially with so many replicas and similar materials on the market. However, there are several techniques that can help you differentiate Bakelite from other plastics or resins:

1. The Scent Test

Bakelite is made from phenolic resin, which has a distinct smell when exposed to heat or friction. You can gently rub a piece of Bakelite jewellery with your finger, and then quickly smell your finger. If it has a distinct “formaldehyde” or “chemical” scent, it is likely genuine Bakelite. Be cautious with this method and avoid doing it with pieces that might have fragile finishes.

2. The Hot Water Test

Bakelite, when exposed to heat, can react in a unique way. To perform this test, drop a small piece of the jewellery (or use a part of a less valuable piece) in hot water. Once it cools, rub it with your fingers. If the piece emits a faint smell, and you feel a slight waxy residue, it is likely Bakelite. Note that this test can leave residue, so use caution.

3. The Sound Test (The Click Test)

Bakelite is a dense material and has a distinct sound when tapped. Hold the piece near your ear and gently tap it with your fingernail or a hard object. Bakelite will produce a solid, almost “clicking” sound, similar to tapping a piece of wood or a ceramic. This is a reliable test, as it differs from the hollow sound that other plastic materials might produce.

4. Weight

Bakelite is a dense and heavy plastic. It will feel heavier than other plastics. Hold your item in one hand and a different plastic item in the other. Do they feel the same? or is your piece heavier?

5. Examine the Colour and Finish

Bakelite jewellery is known for its rich, vibrant colours, often in shades like green, red, amber, and yellow. These colours often have a deep and dull finish. Over time, Bakelite can develop a patina, which might give older pieces a slightly darker or worn appearance. This patina is another tell-tale sign of Bakelite.

6. Placement of fastenings

Always check any fastenings, for example the pin of the back of a brooch. Brooch pins were embedded into the plastic and never glued in place. Riveting was also used to attach fastenings. This is a method of joining parts together using a metal fastener called a rivet.

7. Testing with Metal Polish

Simichrome polish is a widely used tool in Bakelite identification. To perform this test, apply a small amount of Simichrome polish to a cotton cloth and rub it on the piece. If the cloth picks up a yellow or amber colour, the piece is most likely Bakelite. This test works because Bakelite contains certain resins that react with the polish.

In the UK Simichrome can be quite expensive and sometimes difficult to get hold of. An alternative would be Brasso. The polish reacts with the formaldehyde in Bakelite, revealing its authenticity. Here’s how you can safely perform the test:

What You Need:

Metal polish (Simichrome or Brasso recommended)

Soft, white cloth or cotton swab

Mild soap and water (for cleaning afterward)

Steps to Test:

1. Apply a small dab of metal polish to a soft cloth or cotton swab.

2. Gently rub a discreet area of the jewellery, preferably the back or an inconspicuous edge.

3. Inspect the cloth or swab:

If it’s Bakelite, the polish will pick up a yellowish or brown stain, regardless of the original colour of the piece. If there’s no colour change, it might not be Bakelite.

Important Tips:

Avoid over-polishing: Excessive rubbing can damage the piece.

Choose a hidden spot: Always test in an area that won’t affect the appearance of the jewellery.

Clean afterward: Wash the jewellery with mild soap and water to remove any polish residue.

Safety Note:

Be cautious when handling vintage pieces. If you’re unsure or worried about damaging your jewellery, consider consulting a professional appraiser.

8. Baking Soda

Make a thick paste from a small amount of water and some baking soda. Add the baking soda to a teaspoon of water, mix and keep adding until it forms a thick paste. Using a cotton bud/Q-Tip smear the paste onto a small area of the plastic and rub. If the item is made from Bakelite the cotton bud will turn yellow in colour. This is a positive test for Bakelite.

9. Books

Books about Bakelite jewellery can help you to familiarise yourself with popular Bakelite jewellery designs, shapes, colours and styles. Plastic Jewelry by Schiffer contains lots of colourful images as well as some extremely useful information. The Collectors Corner book ‘Bakelite Jewellery‘ is another useful book with full colour photos and a variety of examples. I would recommend having a couple of books on hand, especially if you have yet to find a piece of Bakelite jewellery. Familiarise yourself as much as possible, to increase your chances of finding a piece out in the wild!

How to Spot Fake Bakelite Jewellery

Due to its popularity and collectible value, Bakelite has unfortunately become the target of imitations. Here are some effective tips to distinguish genuine Bakelite from fakes:

1. The “Hot Water” Test

Place the jewelry under hot tap water for about 20-30 seconds.

Imitations, like modern plastics, won’t produce this smell.

2. Weight and Density

Real Bakelite feels heavier and denser compared to lightweight plastic imitations.

Pick up the piece and get a sense of its weight—Bakelite has a substantial feel.

3. Sound Test

Lightly tap two pieces of Bakelite together. Authentic Bakelite produces a deep, clunky sound, while plastic imitators have a lighter, higher-pitched sound.

4. Colour Characteristics

Real Bakelite colours tend to mellow or darken over time due to oxidation.

Fakes often appear bright and shiny without the aged patina.

5. Seam Marks

Bakelite is typically moulded without visible seam lines.

Fake pieces, especially modern plastics, may have visible seams or injection points.

6. Chemical Test – Metal Polish

As mentioned earlier, applying metal polish like Simichrome or Brasso can reveal a yellowish-brown stain if the piece is authentic.

No reaction indicates it may not be Bakelite.

7. Beware of “Catalin” Confusion

Catalin is another form of phenolic resin, very similar to Bakelite but slightly clearer and prone to discoloration. It’s still collectible but often confused with other fakes.

Caring For Bakelite Jewellery

While Bakelite jewellery is sturdy, it still requires proper care to ensure it can be worn for many years to come. Avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals or extreme temperatures, as this can cause damage. Clean your Bakelite jewellery with a soft cloth to remove dirt and oils, and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent discoloration.

Most importantly, wear and enjoy your Bakelite jewellery! Don’t just hide it away in a drawer or cupboard, let it bring you joy.

Conclusion

Identifying genuine Bakelite jewellery can be an exciting and rewarding experience for collectors and vintage enthusiasts. With the right knowledge, you can easily spot Bakelite’s unique qualities and appreciate its role in the history of fashion. Whether you’re looking to add a piece to your collection or simply wish to learn more about vintage jewellery, understanding how to identify Bakelite is an essential skill.

When testing for Bakelite make sure to use more than one test to confirm your results. Having a positive result across a number of tests is much more reliable than a positive result from just one testing method. For example, some pieces will have a stronger smell than others. If you’re piece only has a slight scene to it, performing other tests will help you to confirm or eliminate Bakelite.

Introduction

At Nine Lives and Beyond, the number 9 is more than just a part of our name—it’s a reflection of everything we stand for. From the stories woven into the jewellery we restore to the transformations created through upcycling, the number 9 holds a special place in our journey. Let me share why this number resonates so deeply with me—and how it ties to the heart of what we do.

The Symbolism of the Number 9

1. Completion and New Beginnings

In numerology, the number 9 is known as the number of completion. It represents the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. This mirrors the life of vintage jewellery—each piece may have completed one chapter in its history, but in my hands, it begins a new journey. When you wear a piece of vintage jewellery, you’re not just wearing an accessory; you’re becoming part of its story.

2. Transformation and Renewal

Much like how I breathe new life into forgotten or broken jewellery, the number 9 symbolizes transformation. It’s about taking something old, something overlooked, and turning it into something extraordinary. Each upcycled piece I create is a tribute to this powerful cycle of renewal—a celebration of how beauty can be found in the unexpected.

3. Universality and Timelessness

The number 9 holds a special place in mathematics and mysticism, often considered a “universal” number. Its unique properties—such as always returning to itself when multiplied—speak to timelessness and eternity. This idea aligns perfectly with the nature of vintage jewellery: classic designs that transcend trends, carrying a sense of forever in every sparkle and curve.

Nine Lives: Resilience and Storytelling

Our name, Nine Lives and Beyond, is inspired by the idea of resilience. Just like a cat with nine lives, vintage jewellery has endured through time, adapting to new owners, new fashions, and new purposes. Each piece we restore or reimagine carries the strength of its history and the promise of a bright future.

When you choose vintage, you’re not just purchasing jewellery—you’re investing in the resilience of the past. You’re helping to preserve stories and craftsmanship that would otherwise be lost to the fast-paced, disposable world of fast fashion.

The Cultural Significance of 9

Across cultures and history, the number 9 has always been meaningful:

In Norse mythology, 9 realms make up the universe, reflecting its mystical and sacred power.

In Chinese culture, 9 is a symbol of longevity and eternity—a fitting metaphor for jewellery that’s passed down through generations.

In sacred geometry, 9 is the number of completion and the foundation of the universe.

These associations remind us that the number 9 is a thread that connects people, stories, and traditions—just like the jewellery I curate and create.

Why Choose Vintage Jewellery?

At Nine Lives and Beyond, we believe in sustainability, quality, and individuality. Choosing vintage over fast fashion is a choice to honour the environment, support ethical consumption, and celebrate timeless artistry. Here’s why it matters:

1. Sustainability:

Vintage jewellery reduces waste and minimizes the demand for new mining and production. It’s a choice to treasure what already exists rather than contribute to disposable trends.

2. Craftsmanship:

The jewellery of the past was made to last. Every piece is a testament to fine craftsmanship, using materials and techniques that stand the test of time.

3. Uniqueness:

Vintage jewellery is often one-of-a-kind or limited edition. Unlike mass-produced items, each piece tells a story—one you can continue to write when you make it your own.

4. Transformation:

Through upcycling, we give broken or forgotten jewellery a second chance. Each upcycled piece is a blend of history and modern design, a creation that’s entirely unique. Many of my pieces are one-of-a-kind, transformed through passion and creativity.

Embracing the Energy of Nine

The number 9 represents everything I love about vintage jewellery: its timelessness, its resilience, and its ability to transform. Just as the number 9 symbolizes the end of one cycle and the start of another, Nine Lives and Beyond ensures that every piece of jewellery gets the chance to begin a new chapter.

Whether it’s a restored heirloom or an upcycled treasure, every piece in our collection carries the energy of nine—of completion, renewal, and eternity.

Start Your Journey

When you choose a piece from Nine Lives and Beyond, you’re not just buying jewellery; you’re investing in history, sustainability, and the magic of transformation. Explore our collection today and find the piece that speaks to you—because every story deserves a second life.

Introduction

The simple answer to this question is yes! But don’t panic I’ll explain what this means, how to prevent it and how to clean a tarnished piece of beloved silver jewellery.

What is tarnish?

Tarnish is a thin layer of discoloration or dullness that forms on the surface of metals over time. It can result in sterling silver looking almost black in colour. Not to worry though, this discolouration is not permanent and can be removed!

For sterling silver, tarnish happens because of a chemical reaction between the metal and sulphur-containing substances in the air (like hydrogen sulphide) or moisture. Sterling silver isn’t pure silver; it’s an alloy that’s 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, often copper. These other metals make it more durable, but they also make it more reactive.

If you’re a treasure hunter like me and like to find sterling silver out in the wild, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with tarnish and what it looks like. This will make it easier for you to spot those silver pieces that have been overlooked or under valued.

Why does it occur?

1. Reaction with Sulphur Compounds:

Sulphur is found in air pollution, rubber, wool, and even some foods like eggs and onions. When sterling silver comes into contact with these, it reacts and forms a dark layer called silver sulphide.

2. Moisture and Humidity:

High humidity accelerates tarnishing because water vapor helps the sulfur compounds stick to the silver.

3. Exposure to Chemicals:

Contact with things like perfumes, lotions, cleaning products, or even skin oils can speed up tarnish formation.

4. Storage Conditions:

If silver is stored in open air or near tarnish-causing materials (like cardboard or felt), it will tarnish more quickly.

In short, tarnish is a natural process that happens when sterling silver reacts with its environment. While it’s not harmful, it can make silver look dull or dark, which is why regular cleaning and proper storage are essential!

How to remove tarnish

Removing tarnish from sterling silver jewellery is simple and can often be done using common household items or specialized cleaners. Here are some effective, tried and tested methods:

1. Soap and Water

When to Use: For light tarnish.

What to Do: Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.

Gently scrub the jewellery using a soft cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Rinse with clean water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

2. Baking Soda and Aluminium Foil

When to Use: For moderate tarnish.

What to Do: Line a small bowl with aluminium foil (shiny side up).

Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of salt.

Pour in hot water to dissolve the ingredients.

Submerge the silver jewellery, ensuring it touches the aluminium foil (this triggers a chemical reaction).

Wait 2–5 minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly.

3. Silver Polish

When to Use: For heavy tarnish.

What to Do: Use a commercial silver polish (available in most stores).

Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and gently rub the tarnished areas.

Rinse with water and dry with a clean, soft cloth.

Avoid using polish on pieces with intentional oxidation or intricate designs, as it may strip details.

4. Toothpaste

When to Use: For light tarnish (not recommended for delicate or heavily designed pieces).

What to Do: Use a non-gel, non-whitening toothpaste.

Apply a small amount to the jewellery with your finger, a soft cloth or soft bristle tooth brush (to help you clean hard to reach places)

Rub gently, then rinse thoroughly and dry.

5. Vinegar and Baking Soda

When to Use: For stubborn tarnish.

What to Do: Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl.

Submerge the jewellery and let it soak for 2–3 hours.

Rinse and dry thoroughly.

This also works with apple cider vinegar, my personal favourite. Check out this YouTube video I created to show you how it works https://youtu.be/6tz3TdcTofw

6. Commercial Tarnish Removers

When to Use: For convenience or delicate pieces.

What to Do: Follow the product’s instructions to safely clean your jewellery.

If you’re sterling silver jewellery contains gemstones e.g. amethyst or quartz please take extra care when cleaning. The last thing you want to do is cause any damage to your semi-precious gemstones. The following stones should not be placed in water: Fluorite, Calcite, Malachite, Selenite, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, Opal, Jasper, Moonstone…

Top tips for preventing tarnish after cleaning

Store jewellery in an airtight bag or anti-tarnish pouch.

Use silica gel packets to reduce moisture (be careful not to leave silica gel patches laying around if you have small children/pets).

Wear your silver regularly and clean after each use.

Avoid letting your silver jewellery come into contact with perfume, moisturiser or skin care products.

Summary

With a little tender loving care you’re sterling silver jewellery can always be brought back to its original shine and beauty. It’s important to remember that whilst some people prefer bright shiny silver, others are attracted to the patina which is achieved over time. Some jewellers even add patina/tarnish to there pieces to make them appear aged and to emphasis intricate designs.

I often leave some vintage pieces, especially antique jewellery, unpolished or lightly polished. Retaining some of the patina can be attractive and enhance the character of a vintage piece, adding depth, contrast and a sense of history.

All sterling silver pieces purchased from Nine Lives and Beyond arrive with a free polishing cloth – giving the buyer the option to polish their piece should they wish to.
